Da ein Interview in Spanisch für den normalen Domliebe-Leser wenig Sinn macht, habe ich es in Englisch geführt und zusätzlich auf Deutsch übersetzt. Für die Deutsche Version müsst ihr einfach etwas runter scrollen!
DMLB: Most people in Germany don´t know much about DAMAGE. So
please give us some infos...who are the guys behind DAMAGE, where are you from
and when did you start the label?
Jura: For those who´ve never heard of it, DAMAGE is an independent brand from Madrid, Spain. I started the company with my friend Felix in 2012. A
bit later my other friend Kruman was added to the company. It all started
because we were travelling a lot and we were always talking about doing
something by ourselves. We didn’t know anything about marketing or designing.
But we were like „fuck it, let’s think about a name!“.

DMLB: DAMAGE is not the only skate-connected brand from Madrid.
There are POPCORN hardware, CAPITOL skateboards, UNIVERSAL wheels, ARROW bearings and some more little projects going on. I´ve got the feeling, that
you´re all homies and supporting each other. Am I right with my thoughts?
Jura: Yes! It´s true that there´re a lot of projects/brands going
on right now in Madrid, which is really good. I think its really good for the scene.
Of course, we are all homies and we represent each other, no beef, no bad vibes, we are all in the same boat. We all come from the same point and we´re all
in the streets everyday.
DMLB: So you´re all from the Madrid area...is DAMAGE an „only
Madrid“ project, or where can people find your headwear in shops?
Jura: Yes we are from Madrid like I said. But I have strong connections to the Eeast Coast of USA, so we have retailers all over Spain, and
also in Philadelphia and New Jersey.
I would love to expand our stuff through Europe, too! But
those things go slow! Step by step.

DMLB: If you´re not lucky enough to have the chance to buy DAMAGE
in a shop, how can people get their hands on some DAMAGE stuff...is there an
Online-Store?
Jura: We also have an Online-Store. We ship worldwide, so anybody
can get the product. I remember sending hats to a couple of german customers. And I met one of them randomly in
Madrid some weeks ago! It was a great feeling. Our Online-Store is

DMLB: In your caps, there is a label telling „Hecho a Mano en
Madrid“...so your stuff is hand-made in Madrid. Why is it important for you guys,
that it´s not „Made in China“, but close to your home?
Jura: We used to make our products in China. But somehow I got a
little tired of it. Theres nothing wrong with it of course. In China you can
make anything you want from the worst to the best quality. But its just kind of
crazy for a small company like DAMAGE. You can’t really control how they are making
your product. Sometimes it can be pretty hectic. The payments, shippings, missunderstandings,
etc.
So after a time I really started looking for other manufacturers,
that were closer to me. My idea was to make the hats in Portugal. But all of a
sudden my friend told me about some guys in Madrid, that were making handmade hats.
So I checked them and I was really surprised, when I saw their products. We hit
them up and it all worked. Of course, making hats in our country
was gonna be more expensive, because nobody can compete with the chinese prices.
So I was really thinking about it, but once they made a couple of samples for us, we
went straight for the “Hecho a mano en Madrid’’.

DMLB: When I was walking through the streets of Barcelona and
Madrid lately, I saw a lot of „Handmade in Spain“ Products. I´ve got the feeling, that it´s getting more and more important to support the spanish economy and show the world, that Spain is not only good for holidays, cheap beer and mediteranean food.
Jura: There are a lot of made in spain projects now and I think
people are really thinking about the importance of a good quality product, made
in a small factory. Its like closer to the customers. It would be really good
if the clothing, skateboarding etc industry grows here. We can make really good stuff! So the fact that people is starting some handmade local stuff is really
good and we want to show it the world.

DMLB: In Madrid I saw so many people wearing DAMAGE Caps...so the people here are supporting DAMAGE a lot. Who do you support...do you guys have
a team or any ambassadors?
Jura: I make everyone wear my shit! Just kidding haha! We can’t
complain, people are really backing the company and showing love all the time.
When it started, we made some weird hats for sure. But we are not just a hat company,
we are skateboarders, we´re out in the streets, travelling, filming, always
into something. So that helped a lot to spread the company. We have strong supporters
here for sure, much love to all of them. And yes we have a team of course! I
try to give some stuff to everyone that I think who deserves it or my homies.
Sometimes I wish I could give free stuff to everyone but then I remember that
this is my business and that there is money that we spent to make everything
happen and it gotta keep growing!

DMLB: When I´ve been to Philly last year, I saw some skaters
wearing DAMAGE at LOVE Park and Muni. How did it come, that people are representing
DAMAGE on the East Coast?
Jura: I went to NYC 6 years ago and I had a friend living in
Philly. So me and my friend went there and we pretty much had the best trip
of our life. After that, I started going to Philly every year and spend some
time there skating. So I met the Skate Jawn crew who welcomed us everytime we
were going. I kept going and going and I met more people like the Sabotage guys
and more LOVE Park (RIP) locals. So Philly is my second home now!

DMLB: So you´re Friend with the LOVE Park Locals...how did it
come, that you had a full part in the latest „SABOTAGE 4“ video?
Jura: As I told you, I fell in love with Philadelphia and became
really obsessed with it. I met Brian Panebianco on Instagram first and talked a
bit then my next trip to Philly I got some clips with him and he proposed me to
film a part for the Sabotage4 video. Of course I really liked the idea, so he
came to Madrid for a month and then I went back to Philly again to get the part
done.
DMLB: What are your DAMAGE-Plans fort he future...any collabos we
should be waiting for?
Jura: We have some plans on track!
A lot of collabos and a video about to be dropped. We are gonna do a
collabo with Villains Conspiracy, from Valencia, our Hat Manufacturers,
also with Sabotage Productions, FTC Barcelona and some more!

DMLB: As other young europeans labels like PALACE, HÉLAS and POLAR
are getting more international...what are your plans? Do you wanna grow outside
of Spain and do you want to expand your range and do more clothing beside headwear?
Jura: I would love that man! That is like a dream. Theres so much
to learn yet and so much hard work to do.
I do this because I love it, I love to create something that comes out
of my head and execute the ideas. We gonna expand the range and start doing clothing soon too, that I hope ya’ll like it.
DMLB: Die meisten Leute in Deutschland wissen noch nicht viel über
DAMAGE. Gib uns doch bitte einige Infos...wer sind die Leute hinter DAMAGE, wo
kommt ihr her und wann habt ihr das Label gestartet?
Jura: Für die, die noch nie davon gehört haben. DAMAGE ist ein
unabhängiges Label aus Madrid, Spanien, welches mein Freund Felix und ich im
Jahr 2012 gemeinsam gestartet haben. Etwas später kam mit Kruman ein weiterer
Freund mit ins Boot. Zu DAMAGE kam es, weil wir viel gemeinsam unterwegs waren
und dabei immer darüber sprachen, eine eigene Company zu starten. Wir wussten
damals nichts über Marketing und Design. Das war uns egal, wir dachten uns
einen Namen aus und los ging es.

DMLB: DAMAGE ist nicht das einzige Label in Madrid mit Bezug zu
Skateboarding. Neben DAMAGE gibt es POPCORN Hardware, CAPITOL Skateboards,
UNIVERSAL Wheels, ARROW Bearings und andere kleinere Projekte. Ich habe das
Gefühl, dass ihr alle Homies seid und euch gegenseitig unterstützt. Liege ich da
richtig?
Jura: Absolut! Es ist wahr, dass hier in Madrid gerade viel
passiert und wir einige Projekte/Brands existieren. Das hat extrem gute
Auswirkungen auf unsere Szene hier. Und ja, wir sind echt alles Homies und
unterstützen uns. Dabei gibt es keinen Beef, keine Bad-Vibes, denn wir sind ja
schließlich alle im selben Boot. Wir haben die selben Ansichten in Bezug auf
Skateboarding und unsere Produkte und wir sind alle täglich in den Straßen
unterwegs.
DMLB: Ihr seid alle aus der Region Madrid...ist DAMAGE ein „reines
Madrid“ Projekt, oder wo können die Leute eure Produkte in Shops finden?
Jura: Ja, wie gesagt, wir sind alle aus Madrid. Aber ich habe gute
Verbindungen an die Ostküste der USA, so dass man unsere Produkte auch in
Philadelphia, New Jersey und in Shops überall in Spanien bekommen kann. Sehr
gerne würden wir mit unserem Stuff auch in den anderen Ländern Europas
vertreten sein, aber das funktioniert nicht so schnell. Wir arbeiten daran,
Schritt für Schritt.

DMLB: Wenn man nicht das Glück hat, DAMAGE in einem Shop vor Ort
kaufen zu können, wie können die Leute trotzdem an DAMAGE Produkte
kommen...gibt es einen Online-Shop?
Jura: Ja klar, wir haben einen Online-Store. Wir verschicken
weltweit, so dass jeder unsere Produkte kaufen kann. Ich erinnere mich, dass
ich bereits Caps nach Deutschland verschickt habe. Zufällig traf ich vor
wenigen Wochen einen der Käufer in Madrid. Das war ein super Gefühl für mich.

DMLB: In euren Caps findet man ein Label mit der Aufschrift „Hecho
a Mano en Madrid “...eure Produkte sind also Handgemacht in Madrid. Warum ist
es euch wichtig, dass eure Produkte nicht im fernen China, sondern in eurer
Nähe hergestellt werden?
Jura: Früher haben wir unsere Produkte in China herstellen lassen.
Aber irgendwie gefiel mir das nicht mehr und wir wollten es ändern. An sich ist
ja nichts falsch an „Made in China“. Du kannst dort von der schlechtesten bis
zur besten Qualität alles bekommen. Aber es ist einfach nicht passend für eine
kleine Company, wie DAMAGE eine ist. Du kannst einfach nicht kontrollieren, wie
sie deine Produkte herstellen und es kann immer wieder zu Problemen bei
Zahlungen und Versand kommen. Auch Missverständnisse sind, bei einer solchen
Distanz, schwer zu vermeiden.
Deshalb machte ich mich auf die Suche nach anderen
Herstellern in weniger entfernten Ländern. Meine Idee war es, die Caps in
Portugal herstellen zu lassen. Per Zufall erzählte mir ein Freund über eine
Firma, die hier in Madrid handgefertigte Caps herstellt. Also besuchte ich
diese Firma, machte mir ein Bild von ihrer Produktion und war ziemlich positiv
überrascht. Natürlich sind in Spanien hergestellte Caps etwas teurer, aber da
kann eh keiner mit den chinesischen Preisen mithalten. Der Kostenfaktor brachte
mich zum Nachdenken, als ich jedoch die ersten unserer Samples in den Händen
hatte, war uns klar, dass an „Hecho a Mano en Madrid“ (Handgefertigt in Madrid)
kein Weg vorbei führt.

DMLB: Als ich in der letzten Zeit durch die Straßen Barcelonas und
Madrids ging, sah ich immer mehr „Handgefertigt in Spanien“ Produkte. Ich habe
den Eindruck, dass es immer wichtiger wird die eigene spanische Wirtschaft zu
unterstützen und der Welt zu zeigen, dass Spanien nicht nur gut für Urlaub,
billiges Bier und mediteranes Essen ist.
Jura: Ja, das ist richtig. Es gibt immer mehr „Made in Spain“
Projekte. Nicht zuletzt, weil die Leute Interesse an guter Qualität, bedingt
durch kleine Fabriken und Nähe zwischen Produzent und Verbraucher haben. Es
wäre super, wenn unsere einheimische Kleidungs- und Skateindustrie dadurch
wächst. Wir können echt gute Produkte herstellen und das wollen wir auch der
Welt zeigen.

DMLB: In Madrid habe ich verdammt viele Leute mit DAMAGE Caps
gesehen...die Leute hier supporten DAMAGE extrem. Wen unterstütt ihr...habt ihr
ein Team oder andere Botschafter eurer Marke?
Jura: Ich sorge dafür, dass hier alle meinen Suff tragen müssen!
Nein, ich mache nur Spaß! Wir können uns absolut nicht beschweren, denn die
Leute unterstützen uns sehr und geben uns damit viel für unsere Arbeit zurück. Am
Anfang haben wir echt teilweise noch seltsame Caps hergestellt. Aber wir sind
ja auch nicht nur die Jungs hinter einer Headwear Firma, sondern wir sind
Skateboarder, immer in den Straßen unterwegs, verreisen, filmen und immer mit
irgendetwas beschäftigt. Das hat uns geholfen die Company weiter zu entwickeln
und bekannter zu machen. Wir sind unseren Unterstützern hier sehr dankbar. Und,
ja klar, wir haben ein Team! Ich versuche jedem, von dem ich denke, dass er es
verdient hat, mit Free-Stuff zu versorgen. Am liebsten würde ich allen unsere
Caps schenken, aber dann wird mir immer wieder klar, dass DAMAGE dann doch ein
Geschäft ist, wir unser Geld investiert haben und wir das Ziel haben, dass
unser Projekt wächst!

DMLB: Als ich letztes Jahr in Philly war, sah ich einge Skater mit

aufnahm. So ging es immer weiter. Ich lernte die SABOTAGE Jungs und andere LOVE
Park (RIP) Locals kennen, so dass Philly zu meinem zweiten Zuhause wurde.

DMLB: Du bist also ein Kumpel der LOVE Park Locals...aber wie kam
es dazu, dass du eine Full-Part im neuen „SABOTAGE 4“ Video hast?
Jura: Wie gesagt, ich habe mich in Philadelphia verliebt und war
wie besessen von dieser Stadt. Zunächst über Instagram lernte ich Brian
Panebianco kennen, erzählte ihm von meinem nächsten Philly Trip und filmte dann
in Philly gemeinsam mit ihm. Daraufhin hatte er die Idee, dass ich doch einen
Part mit ihm filmen solle. Das gefiel mir natürlich, so dass er für knapp einen
Monat nach Madrid kam. So konnten wir hier filmen und dann bei meinem nächsten
Philly Besuch den Part fertig machen.
DMLB: Was sind eure DAMAGE-Pläne für die Zukunft...gibt es
Kollabos in der nächsten Zeit?
Jura: Wir haben einige Pläne auf Lager. Es wird unter anderem
Kollabos mit VILLAINS CONSPIRACY aus Valencia, unserem Hersteller,
SABOTAGE PRODUCTIONS, FTC Barcelona und weiteren geben! Außerdem soll ein
DAMAGE Video kommen.

DMLB: Andere junge Label wie PALACE, HÉLAS und POLAR werden
zunehmend internationaler...was sind eure Pläne? Wollt ihr auch außerhalb
Spaniens wachsen, euer Produktangebot ausweiten und neben der Headwear auch
Klamotten herstellen?
Jura: Das würden wir sehr gerne und es wäre ein absoluter Traum! Dazu
gehört aber auch, dass man viel lernt und arbeitet. Ich mache DAMAGE aus Liebe.
Ich liebe es einfach mir Dinge zu überlegen und diese dann in die Wirklichkeit
umzusetzen. Wir werden versuchen unsere Produktpalette in Zukunft auszuweiten,
mehr Klamotten zu machen und ich hoffe, dass euch die neuen Produkte gefallen
werden.
